7 Things You Shouldnt Include on Your Resume - CareerAlley

7 Things You Shouldnt Include on Your Resume - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Most people dont really like putting together a resume. Writing about yourself is rarely easy, and when you have to try to sell yourself by talking up accomplishments, it can be even harder. Because of this, people tend either to toss a resume together quickly without putting much thought into it, or obsessing over every little detail. Either way, they end up making the mistake of including information that no employer really wants to read about. How bad is it? There are so many errors on resumes, that CareerBuilder holds an annual survey of the Most Outrageous Resume Mistakes Employers Have Found. Most mistakes in the application process occur in resumes. The worst part about screwing up your resume by including unnecessary information (or errors) is that it will likely be the only thing a potential employer sees. Why? Because no one wants to interview someone who cant even get their resume right. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid. Including your interests and hobbies: A resume is meant to show your work and education, not what you like to do on weekends, but all too often people include informationabout how they enjoy basket-weaving, swimming, or going to the movies. The justification most people use for including these things is that they think it willhelp to show they are a well rounded person. The only reason you would include hobbies or other interests on your resume is becuase it is professionally relevant. For example, you can you enjoyswimming if you are applying for a job as a physical trainer. It is best to either find a way to list relevant career interestsunder your experience or save it for the interview. Listing all of your primary education schools: If youre a high school student and youre applying for a job a local retail chain, include your high school under education. You can even note any amazing accomplishments youve had there if you want, but you dont need to. Theres no reason to ever listyour middle and grade school information. If youre a college graduate, never put any schools on your resume before college, theres just no reason to do so. If you graduated high school but have not attended college, you can probably get by without an education section. Writing an objective: Objectives on resumes were once very popular (and somewhat expected). Whether or not to include an objective is a bit of a bone of contention, but the general consensus is to leave this out. Having one is an old idea and just adds clutter to your resume. Most hiring managers want to see that you have experience in doing the job, not that your goal is to gain experience. You want your resume to show what you can offer them, not what youd like them to offer you.Consider putting a summary statement or, if you are looking to save space, just start with your experience. Having salary expectations: Most experts will tell you to avoid discussing salary requirements during an interview until the last interview round. It does not make any sense to include this information on your resume. Discussing how much compensationyou want to be paid is a challenging conversation at best. Its better to let them tell you what theyre willing to pay first and then negotiate from there if necessary. If your resume includes a salary number thats higher than what they feel the job deserves, chances are you wont get an interview at all. Or worse, you could end up low-balling yourself if they see youre willing to accept a salary lower than what they were planning to offer. Dating things besides your work history and education: The only things you should date are your education and work experience. Theres no need for dates for extracurricular activities in college, volunteer workor professional organizations just list them. Most hiring managers will probably barely look at them unless they see something that interests them or specifically pertains to the job and then theyll just notethat you have the experience. If you feel theyre important enough to date them, they should probably be listed under your work experience. Leaving gaps: Gaps in your resume is a big red flag. If you were involved in various organizations between paying jobs, listing these items is fine. Without lying, its always wise to close these gaps to the best of your abilities using whatever experience you have. This is just one great reason why its smarter to use the title Experience rather than Employment Experience or Work Experience. Another way to make gaps less noticeable is to only include your years of employment rather than specific months. Saying References are available upon request: People think they are covering their bases by adding this, but its just more unnecessary clutter. You dont need to tell a prospective employer that you will allow them to see your references if they ask thats an expectation! This isnt quite as bad as actually listing your references on your resume, but theres no need to do it. Remember, your resume is the first thing a prospectiveemployer will seeand in order to sell yourself it should bepresented in as concise a manner as possible. This means sticking to a single page in most situations (unless you have more than ten years of experience) and not wasting their time with information they wont really care about. Spend your time tailoring your resume to make sure it shows them that you will meet the positions specific requirements. We are always eager to hear from our readers. How to handle awkward requests at work -

How to handle awkward requests at work - We spend a lot of time at work with colleagues, and this time of year tends to be rife with opportunities to experience the awkward. With the gift-giving and holiday party season just around the corner, use these tips to prepare for those inevitable awkward moments at work that could otherwise leave you in a  bad mood.   People asking for money Whether its to support their favorite charity or for a gift for the boss or a co-worker, it can be uncomfortable to tell someone you dont want to support his or her cause or pay for a gift for someone you dont even like. How you respond will depend on the situation. If its a gift for the boss or a colleague, you may be best off giving something than taking a stand and being labeled uncooperative. However, you can always say you are taking care of your own gift, or, in the case of a charity, explain that youve already maxed out your quarterly charitable contributions. Gift-giving Whether a co-worker gives you a gift and you dont have one in return, or youre deciding if you should buy the boss a gift, the gift-giving season can be awkward. While you shouldnt feel obligated to give anyone a gift, its a good idea to identify the workplace rituals before its too late if you want to give a  good impression. If everyone exchanges presents, you may want to just go along and avoid discomfort. If you have financial issues, give something homemade or thoughtful that isnt expensive. If you feel strongly and dont want to participate for religious reasons simply explain why you arent able to participate. Colleagues asking you to support their kids fundraisers In many companies, it is actually against policy to ask co-workers to purchase items, especially if it is a supervisor asking an employee. However, if you dont want to pull the, its wrong of you to even ask me excuse, you can still easily beg off by saying that you already got your share of (wrapping paper, cookie dough or other trinket) from the neighbors kid. Conversations about salaries or bonuses If your company gives holiday bonuses or raises at this time of year, it can be awkward to answer a colleagues question about what you received. Whether its because you think you may have earned more or less, it can be a difficult conversation either way. If youre not comfortable discussing it, you can always demur and say youve found its a good policy not to discuss money with colleagues and leave it at that. Office parties Its not bad enough that you have to spend all day with colleagues who have  gross habits. At this time of year, they expect you to prepare to enjoy evenings socializing with them, too. Even if your colleagues arent your favorite people, its still a good idea to extend yourself and join in the fun รข€" even if it isnt that much fun for you. Make a point to limit or avoid alcohol consumption and keep the conversations casual and pleasant. You never know, an office party may provide an introduction to someone youve been wanting to meet; never ignore the networking potential. Praying For the non-religious or those in minority religions, saying grace before work events can be very awkward. Usually, your best bet is to be respectful, but dont feel compelled to bow your head or say amen if you dont want to participate. Share your own stories of awkward work moments and how you handled them in the comments section below. 7 Signs Your Child Has a Toxic Teacher

7 Signs Your Child Has a Toxic Teacher School culture consists of an underlying norm of values and beliefs regarding teaching and learning that, in theory, teachers and administrators all hold. That said, a school might have a positive or negative culture, the latter of which can breed toxic teachers. Or, of course, there might just be a badeanstalt apple of a teacher among an otherwise positive school culture. In a school with a positive culture, professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madisons Department of Educational Administration, co-author ofShaping School Culture The Heart of Leadershipand researcher behind the 2002 study published in theJournal of Staff Development,Positive or Negative, Dr. Kent D. Peterson told Education World, Theres an informal network of heroes and heroines and an informal grapevine that passes along information about whats going on in the school ... A set of values that supports professional development of teachers, a sense of responsibility for student learning, and a positive, caring atmosphere..In a toxic school environment, however, teacher relations are often conflictual, the staff doesnt believe in the ability of the students to succeed, and a generally negative attitude pervades the school halls, Dr. Peterson explained.According to Dr. Peterson, schools with a toxic culture lack a clear sense of purpose, have norms that reinforce inertia, blame students for lack of progress, discourage collaboration and often have actively hostile relations among staff.Of course, sometimes a teacher just doesnt quite fit the mold, and their actions alone arent in line with the schools overall mission or the needs of its students. While their negativity isnt necessarily a direct reflection of the schools toxic culture, they may just be a lone toxic teacher. But how do you identify a toxic teacher? Theyre notlage always outright bad teachers. In fact, they may even be popular among some students and even other parents and the education board. H ere are eight ways to spot whether or not your kid has a toxic teacher.1. Theyre DisillusionedDisillusionment is defined as a feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be. If a teacher feels disillusioned with regards to their students, that could mean that they dont believe in the ability of their students. And, of course, if they dont believe in their students, they may manifest a reality in which their students dont succeed.2. They GossipA teacher who spends their time gossiping is probably a teacher who doesnt spend enough time focused on the good of their students things like lesson planning and meeting with parents after school. The gossiper may spread rumors and talk that makes them look better, likely because theyre not doing enough professionally to make themselves look good.3. They Display an Attitude of DissentA toxic teacher might bring great ideas to the table when talking with parents or colleagues, but t hey dont necessarily welcome other great ideas. While they claim to be participatory, their input is almost always negative and ensures that next to nothing gets accomplished. Then they may blame students for the lack of progress.4. They Only Do the Bare MinimumMaybe a teacher is effective in the classroom and their students perform well and get good grades. On the surface, this teacher looks great. But this teacher does the bare minimum to challenge their students thats largely because, if their students perform poorly, they dont want it to be a reflection on them. So they do the bare minimum to skate by.5. They Dont Try to Do Better ThemselvesA good teacher knows that, just as much as theyre in school to teach, theyre in school to learn. Effective teachers not only teach their students, but they also learn from them they discover what teaching methods work well and what doesnt, as well as their own personal strengths and weaknesses. And when they discover methods that dont work or weaknesses that could use improvement, they strive to come up with new ideas and develop their teaching skills. They take constructive feedback well and they implement action plans. A toxic teacher, however, doesnt try to do better even though they expect their students to do just that.6. They Degrade or Publicly Humiliate Some StudentsA toxic teacher may be notorious for degrading or publicly humiliating students. They may make some students feel that theyre not good enough by doing things like shaming them during a presentation or calling them out for their grades in the middle of class. They might also, consciously or subconsciously, encourage or even allow other students to exclude or make fun of certain students.7. They Reject Some StudentsWhen a teacher refuses to acknowledge a students presence, value or efforts by verbally communicating (or by communicating with young students with affirmative gestures like giving them star stickers), they may be a toxic teacher. A wealth of research suggests that pumping up students when they perform well can encourage them to keep doing well, but a student who strives for attention and any kind of acknowledgement of their hard work (particularly a young student) might feel like their efforts are pointless.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a multimedia journalist and an adventure aficionado with a keen cultural curiosity and an affinity for solo travel. Squad goals abound at this media giant, where respect and collaboration are the foundation of their highly visible and lauded products One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot mora to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is furthe r supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportu nities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
